5 Items Needed to Start Your Decluttering Project

5 Items You Need to Start Your Decluttering Project

Many of my clients tell they just do not know where to start or what they need to start organizing so they do not do anything. That is okay because I will give you those tools to help you start.

The first item you will need is a plan. Decide which room or space would be the easiest. The room or space should have little or no emotional attachment belongings in it. Maybe your guest room or the dresser in the guest room is the space you should start your organizing project.  I highly recommend writing down your goal for each space before you start.

The second item needed is have the time scheduled on your calendar. It should appear just as a doctor or hair appointment would appear. Block off as much time as you believe you can work on the space. Minimum should be 30 minutes to an hour. Less then this will just not let you see your progress. There is no way to tell how long it will take to complete the project. It might take 2 or 3 more times to complete just as it does my clients.

The third item you will need is a box or bag for those articles you will be donating. Remember if is not torn or broken, let someone put life into that piece. You have enjoyed it in your life, and now it is time for someone new to enjoy it. May charities take your unneeded possessions. I have found many charities that help veterans, single parents, and the less fortunate.

The fourth item you need to start your decluttering project are the questions and honesty to eliminate the possessions you will be going through. Remind yourself of your goal you have written down for the space and refer to it often. Many of my clients make a sign to hang in the space to motivate them to answer those questions honestly. If you have problems with this stage of organizing and decluttering, calling a third party to help might be a good idea. Friends and family members are emotionally attached to you so they will be emotionally attached to your stuff too. Avoid this rabbit hold as you will accomplish less then desired.

The last activity you will need to complete your organizing and decluttering project is trash bags or boxes to take everything out and away the same day you are working on the space. If you have collected boxes over the years, now is a great time to eliminate them with your donations.  Avoid leaving bags and boxes in the house as you might find yourself or others in the house going through them. If you need to add time to the project that is ok. Remember you can accomplish your goal. Need help getting started? Give me a call.
