Making Your Resolution, Getting Organized, Happen

Getting organized is in the top 10 of the most common resolutions. But like many of the resolutions made such as losing weight, getting in shape, and getting financially sound, they are usually forgotten within a month. Why do so many of us commit to these resolutions and fail? Most individuals fail because they have made the goal too broad.  The goals need to be more specific such as organize the desk to make my office more functional or organize the kitchen pantry so others can find what they want.   After the goal is more specific, break it down into pieces so it will be much more of an obtainable resolution.  Examples would be start by organizing my desk drawers, clear the top of my desk, get bins to separate the foods in the pantry, and toss all expired foods.  Many forget their resolutions, so writing down the goals and steps to get there will help as a reminder.  Keeping the resolutions in a spot you can see them often will also help in reminding you of your goals.

Know your limit as you work and keep track of how long you can concentrate on your project.   Setting a timer for 30 minutes is a great place to start.   Increase your time 15 minutes each time you work on your goal until you are comfortable with the amount of time you are working.  Make sure you are scheduling it like you would a doctor's appointment. If you are like many of my clients, your schedule is different every week. Take a few minutes every Sunday and look at your schedule for the week and then schedule your organizing time based on your availability. Sure, emergencies come up, but if you schedule it weekly, you will accomplish that goal much sooner.

Starting the process will take time and you will be making many decisions as you clear the clutter that is making the space unorganized.  Remember it is a process not an event, so it will take time and that is another reason to schedule the time on your calendar.  Call me if you need some help getting started or would just like some ideas on how to get started.

Your closet can look this good with a little scheduling and planning.
