Stress-Free Moving Tips
It is said that moving can be one of life's top three most stressful events. While it can seem daunting, with a bit of preparation and planning you can approach the process with confidence and even a touch of grace. Here are some of my stress-free moving tips! Share them with anyone in your life who has a move in their future.
Eliminate Clutter
The key is to eliminate unwanted and unused items before you move. Two reasons to do so are as follows: movers generally charge by the number of boxes, or a total of weight, so narrowing down what will eventually be packaged and transported can both help with time and budget. A second incentive is that when you find yourself lost in a sea of boxes after the move, you will thank yourself for taking the time to eliminate items that were no longer needed. I find that many clients still admit to having boxes they never unpacked a year or more after a move. Embrace your decluttering journey now, even if your next move is still a ways off.
Pack Your Suitcase
I encourage you to find your suitcase and take a few moments to pack it with several days worth of clothing and essential items; prescriptions, beloved hair care products or bedside reading glasses, among others. In the days following the move, you will appreciate not having to scramble to find your favorite house shoes or that additional phone charger.
Fresh Sheets
There is nothing better than falling asleep on clean sheets; ensuring that you have cleaned any dirty laundry before your move will guarantee that those sweet dreams come even sooner. Usually the day of your move, you will unmake your beds and pack any bedding, then your movers will disassemble, move and assemble your beds. How delightful it will be to have those items, fresh and neatly labeled, ready for you to collapse into bed after a long day.
Handle With Care
As you begin to receive quotes from movers, consider requesting that they take on the task of wrapping and boxing any of your fragile items. Although nothing can truly replace sentimental value, it’s comforting to know that movers assume financial responsibility for the items they pack, and they’ll be responsible for anything that doesn’t make it to your new home.
A Number System
In your new house, take a moment to assign a number or letter to each room and request that boxes be packed and labeled accordingly. Go room to room and place a sign or even a sticky note at the entrance with the corresponding symbol. When the movers enter the home, your boxes will be easily directed into the correct room! The last thing you want is to be rummaging through your new house for kitchen essentials, only to discover them stacked in the bathroom.
Park Your Car
Try to avoid using your garage as a storage space. I encourage you to park at least one of your cars (if not all) in the garage on your first night. Many of my clients end up using their garage as storage when they first move in and then struggle to clear it out for its intended use.
Request Help
If unpacking time is limited before starting back to work after your move, consider hiring someone to help. Having someone to unpack and organize necessities the days surrounding your move will allow you some time to have your coffee and eat some breakfast on your first morning in your new home. Most will also take care of eliminating empty boxes and packing material so that it doesn’t pile up and create chaos in your new space.
These are a few simple stress-free moving tips to help boost your confidence as you gear up for the next big move. With a bit of preparation and planning, you can shift from dreading the process to eagerly anticipating your new home.
