Start Your Year Organized in 2023

Another holiday season has come and gone, and just like that, it’s January! The New Year is the perfect time to wind down from the busy flurry of holiday activities and make a plan to get organized for the year ahead.

Instead of writing down resolutions you will not be able to keep, consider just organizing as a new task you will add to your calendar and habits for 2023.  If you must write down a few resolutions, “The Today Show” reported 5 top resolutions most of us can keep that Country Living magazine put out.

1. Keep your car clean

2. Make your bed

3.  Compliment someone and mean it

4.  Get outside

5.  Schedule more time with friends

If you’re still not quite sure how to begin, keep reading for more helpful tips and tricks to start your year organized in 2023.

Clear Out The Clutter

First and foremost, clear out the clutter! It can be especially challenging to start your year organized when you’re distracted by chaos and bogged down with a messy jumble of items.

Begin your refreshing restart by identifying items that you do not want or use. Now that the holidays are over, maybe you have some leftover gifts that you have yet to open. Remember that once a gift is given to you, you are free to do whatever you wish with it. It is only taking up space if you keep it in its original box and never use it. Gather up your unused items and ask family members if they want them. If not, pass them onto someone who does. Donating items is a great way to help others and live a more sustainable life for the health of the planet, too.

Be sure that your space is clutter-free before you buy any containers to organize your belongings. You will save money if you only buy storage for items that you really need. Plus, this strategy will help you avoid saving things “just in case.”

Manage Your Time & Tasks

My clients often enlist my help because they are overwhelmed or they simply don’t have the time to get organized. Sorting, labeling, and moving boxes around can easily fill several hours, and then there is upkeep to maintain an organized environment, too. However, sometimes a little time management can make a world of difference.

Your best course of action is to develop a detailed plan that clearly outlines your goals for 2023 and what you need to do to achieve them. Keep this plan as a reminder and motivation tool, using it to track your progress throughout the year. This will help you stay accountable to your goals, and you’ll also get the satisfaction of feeling productive and accomplished each time you cross a task off the list.

If you’ve been letting things pile up over the years, it might seem like a daunting task to dive in and tackle the mess. But you don’t have to tackle it all at once! It’s a good idea to consider your big picture goals, but that won’t be especially helpful unless you also know how you are going to attain them. Break down your goals into manageable, bite-sized pieces that include simple actionable steps. If you are organizing your entire home, focus on just one space at a time to avoid overwhelm.

Once you know what needs to be done, be sure to figure out what you can realistically achieve each month. Map out your daily schedule on a calendar, and then look for unfilled time that you can block for organization tasks each day or week. Try to block the same time or day consistently to get into a routine and improve your chances of success.
