5 Tips to Start Your Decluttering Project

As the holiday season approaches, our homes can quickly become chaotic. Before any festivities begin, I recommend a thorough decluttering, as it can make a world of difference! Many of my clients express uncertainty about where to start, and that’s completely understandable. You’re definitely not alone in feeling that way.

I’m excited to share five tips to kickstart your holiday decluttering project. Whether you’re prepping for a big family gathering or just want to make your space a calm resting point, these tips will guide you.

1. A Clear Plan

A thoughtful plan will help you stay organized and will also boost your motivation by breaking the big tasks into manageable pieces. I recommend starting with an area that feels neutral, like a guest room or a closet. This helps ease you into the process without feeling overly emotional about the items. Start by writing down specific, achievable goals for each space and keep them in mind as you work. This helps to keep you focused, energized, and moving forward with purpose.

2. Scheduled Time

A dedicated time for decluttering is key to making steady progress and avoiding the feeling of being overwhelmed. I like to treat it like a professional appointment by blocking off specific times on my calendar. I find that even 30 minutes to an hour per session can make a noticeable difference. Another helpful tip is to set a timer, which can help keep you on track, maintain focus, and make the process feel manageable. I’m always amazed by how much I can accomplish when I have a clear start and end time!

3. Donation Prep

As you declutter, don’t forget that someone else may find joy in something you no longer use. Donating items that are in good condition is a wonderful way to help others in your community. I like to keep a designated bag or box ready as I work through each space so I can easily set aside items for donation. Local charities are often in need of gently used clothes and household items, and they frequently support specific communities and causes. Knowing that my donations will make a difference can be incredibly rewarding and it always motivates me to keep going.

4. Ask the Right Questions

As with most things, honesty is the best policy. I find that asking myself if an item actually adds value or if it’s just taking up space is the best route. As I mentioned, it can be helpful to write down goals for the space to keep you focused and inspired as you work. If the process starts to feel too emotional or overwhelming, consider hiring a professional to offer a fresh perspective and guide you through the process with compassion and expertise. This makes it easier to let go of what no longer serves you.

5. Immediate Removal

My last tip is to take immediate action by removing all the items you've decided to donate the same day you’re decluttering. This includes not only the bags and boxes but also any accumulated storage you might have from past decluttering sessions. If you've collected boxes over the years, now is the time to clear them out along with your donations. I also recommend that you avoid leaving bags or boxes in the house, as they can tempt you or others to go through them and second-guess your decisions.

As the holidays tip-toe closer, there’s no better time to start your decluttering and make room for the special moments ahead.
